Jane Edwards Scholarships

As a part of her estate plan, Jane Edwards created a "Jane Edwards Scholarship Fund."  $270,000 was deposited with the Oklahoma United Methodist Foundation as an endowment in December 2005, and will generate the standard endowment distribution (currently 5%APR) for annual scholarships. $27,505 more was deposited to the endowment from the residual estate during the summer, 2006, bringing the corpus to $297,505This generated over $8,400 through June 2006 for all Edwards scholarships.

The first round of Edwards scholarships was awarded in the summer of 2006. They amounted to $8000.  The scholarships are divided among the seven listed categories below.

Three scholarship categories are for graduating high school seniors only, while four categories apply to students of any year in higher education.  All scholarships are not limited to colleges, but can be used for vocational training, specialized training, or continuing education. Applicants must be a member of Wesley UMC, have gone through a United Methodist confirmation process (or similar United Methodist faith, history and beliefs course) [except Children and Youth Aid], and have maintained at least a 2.5 GPA.  Full scholarships require at least a 12-hour minimum enrollment for the coming semester.  Scholarship recipients that are enrolled in 6-11 hours for the coming semester will receive a half scholarship.

The Edwards Scholarship Endowment generates approximately $13,000 for annual scholarships, having had 5% APR distributions for a whole year.

The following scholarships will be awarded annually in the summer:

  1. Academic Achievement: This is to be given to a graduating high school senior who is a member of Wesley UMC and has completed a confirmation class. This scholarship shall be given on the basis of highest grade point average for high school.

  2. Christian Activities: This is to be given to a graduating high school senior who is a member of Wesley UMC and has completed a confirmation class. This scholarship shall be given on the basis of the individual's church, community, and school activities that further Christ's kingdom by helping others for the greater good of all.

  3. Athletic: This is to be given to a graduating high school senior who is a member of Wesley UMC and has completed a confirmation class. This scholarship shall be given on the basis of outstanding athletic prowess shown by an eligible person that is planning to further their education.

  4. Divinity: This is to be given to a graduating high school senior or any current college student who is a member of Wesley UMC and has completed a confirmation class. This scholarship would be given to a student whose goal is to become a part of the United Methodist Church in some professional capacity, including ordained minister, diaconal, counselor, or youth director.

  5. Educational Assistance: This is to be given to a graduating high school senior or any current college student who is a member of Wesley UMC and has completed a confirmation class. This scholarship would be based on student need.

  6. Children and Youth Aid: This scholarship would be awarded to any college students in the local area who could help with after-school children and youth activities, to include the LOGOS program.

  7. General Scholarships: Number of general scholarships and award amount will be at the discretion of the Scholarship Committee.

The first five scholarships are to be the largest monetary awards. There should be only one scholarship awarded per year from each of the first five scholarship categories. The last two categories are to be lesser amounts awarded and multiple scholarships permitted. The Wesley UMC Scholarship Committee shall use the above guidelines for the scholarship awards, but otherwise shall have discretion over numbers and award amounts for all scholarships.

Each scholarship check will be made out directly to the school of choice of each scholarship recipient.

Funds for the scholarships will come from endowment distributions, which accumulate in the money market portion of the endowment account. Requests for scholarships come from the Wesley Scholarship Committee in Shawnee, OK. Requests shall include scholarship name, amount, recipient's name, school of choice, and school address. Requests must have two authorized signatures. Scholarship checks will only be issued from the money market portion of the endowment account.

The entire annual proceeds of the endowment need not be allocated for scholarships if eligibility requirements are not met. Unused cash for scholarships shall stay in the money market portion of the endowment account at the Oklahoma United Methodist Foundation.
